Camshaft 038109101E for VW 1.9 TDI (AQM / ASV) Golf and Beetle
Product Overview
The 038109101E camshaft is the valvetrain core of the Volkswagen 1.9 TDI on the AQM and ASV engine codes — the workhorse pump-düse (PD) diesel fitted to the Golf Mk4 and the New Beetle. On a PD engine the camshaft does double duty: it opens the valves and drives the unit injectors, so correct lobe geometry keeps both valve timing and injection timing accurate. A worn 038109101E is a common — and commonly missed — root cause of rough PD idle and smoke that gets misdiagnosed as an injector fault. TOSEN AUTO supplies this camshaft forged from alloy steel with induction-hardened lobes, 100% inspected, ready to install.

Compatibility & Fitment
This camshaft fits the AQM (81 kW / 110 hp) and ASV (66 kW / 90 hp) 1.9 TDI PD engines. These two codes are shared across the VW Golf Mk4, Bora/Jetta, New Beetle, Audi A3 (8L), Skoda Octavia I and SEAT León I — but only on AQM and ASV. The higher-output 1.9 TDI PD codes — AJM (81 kW 4-valve), ATJ, ARL (96 kW / 130 hp) and others — use different camshafts (and some are 4-valve, completely different heads). Always confirm the engine code on the timing-belt cover sticker or in the service book before ordering. A “1.9 TDI” badge on the boot is not enough.

Why the PD Camshaft Matters More
On a pump-düse TDI the camshaft also drives the unit injectors via dedicated, high-lift lobes. This is the key difference from a conventional diesel: a worn injection lobe retards injection timing and reduces peak injection pressure, which shows up as:
- Grey or black smoke under load that an injector clean or additive will not fix — the injection event is starting late.
- Rough, “lopey” idle, often worse when cold, that smooths above idle.
- Loss of low-RPM torque — the PD engine’s low-end punch depends on crisp injection timing; a worn injection lobe softens it.
- Soft, coolant-temperature-independent starting — slow to fire even with good glow plugs and a healthy battery.
- Misfire codes on one or two cylinders that move when you swap injectors but return — the cam lobe, not the injector, is the limit.
Before replacing injectors on a high-mileage AQM/ASV, check cam lobe lift with a dial gauge on each injector lobe. A worn 038109101E is often the real culprit. Full diagnosis in bad camshaft symptoms.

Installation Notes
- Lock the cam at TDC. Use the VW cam-locking block (the flat plate that bridges the cam bearing saddles) to hold the cam at TDC before slackening the belt. Do not rotate the engine with the belt off — the PD engine is interference.
- Inspect rockers and lifters for pitting. A worn cam sheds hard debris that pits the rocker pads and lifter faces. Replace any pitted rocker — reusing them will wipe a new cam lobe quickly.
- Set injector timing via VCDS after reassembly. PD injection timing is electronic, but the mechanical baseline (cam-to-crank phasing) must be correct, otherwise VCDS timing deviation will be out of spec.
- Replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat at the same service. The 1.9 TDI belt interval is well known; do the full kit while the front is off.
- Use correct torque sequence on the bearing caps and prime oil pressure before starting to protect the new lobes during break-in.

Why Choose This Camshaft
- Matches the original VAG PD lobe profile — correct geometry for both valve lobes and unit-injector lobes on AQM/ASV.
- Induction-hardened lobes and journals for long PD service life under high injection-lobe loads.
- Forged alloy steel, 100% inspected for runout, lobe profile and surface finish.
- Factory-direct B2B pricing; sample orders accepted, volume pricing for distributors.
FAQ
Q: Will this fit the 130 hp 1.9 TDI (ARL)?
A: No — the ARL and other higher-output PD codes use a different camshaft. Order strictly by the engine code on your timing-belt cover.
Q: Does it include the rockers and injector lobes?
A: The camshaft is one piece with both valve and injection lobes machined in. Rockers and lifters are not included.
Q: Is AQM the same as ASV for the camshaft?
A: Yes — both codes share OEM 038109101E. The difference is power output, not the cam.
Q: Can I reuse my PD lifters?
A: Only if their contact faces are perfect. Pitted lifters will destroy a new cam — replace as a set when in doubt.
Q: What is the MOQ?
A: Samples (1–5 pcs) accepted; distributor pricing from 20+ pcs.
